Perun (Перýн), the highest god of the Slavic Pantheon. He is symbolized as a mighty eagle sitting atop the World Tree Yggdrasil. From this tree the Ruler of Rulers would keep watch over all of the living world. His mortal enemy, Veles, the water god and ruler of rulers for the land of the dead. Residing in the deep dark roots of Yggdrasil. Veles would often torment Perun by stealing his wife, cattle and children. Perun would follow him all through the Earth, throwing mighty lightning bolts here and there! (Whenever people would see lightning strikes, it was often believed that Veles was hiding behind that tree or rock.) One day, Perun managed to hit Veles with a particularly strong bolt, killing him and sending him back to the watery roots of Yggdrasil. Perun then returned to the very top of the Yggdrasil and proclaimed "Well, there is your place, remain there!" (Ну, там тваё мейсца, там сабе будзь!)
