In ancient Europe, the King of Hearts stood for King Charles of the Holy Roman Empire, better known as Charlemagne. The card is commonly called the "Suicide King" due to the sword that appears to be going through his head. The story goes that upon the death of two of his sons, Charles started a mental decline into madness, becoming obsessed with the 13th card in a deck, the King of Hearts. He believed that it was this card that was bringing him bad luck and became mental over trying to figure out what it meant. Not long after, Charles' caretaker would find him, face shrunken back in fear, holding his sword in one hand. “Ils m’ont montré la vérité du treize et ce n’est pas fais pour les yeux des motels.” he cried, which in English means “They have shown me the truth of thirteen, and it is not the preserve of mortal eyes.” and he forced the sword through his temple and out the other side. After this incident the card face was changed from him holding an axe, to him with a sword. Depicting his descent into madness and death.
